Hydrogen Peroxide for Animal Care

It is worth noting that the conventional cleaning products like chlorine bleach or other cleaning products are harmful to the health of our pets in the same way as they are for human health. Therefore the use of hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down into water and oxygen, is a safe sterilizing product for food dishes and litter boxes, as well as in their bath.

Fish:

It can be used to clean out fish tanks and ponds. Do not use H2O2 to clean the tanks while the fish are still in it as different fish can cope with different levels of H2O2 so you could accidentally kill your fish.

Laboratory tests conducted by fish culturists have demonstrated that H2O2 can be safely used to provide oxygen to small fish. In one test, 25 Fry (2cm long) were put into each of two one-quart bottle of water. Then during the three day period 12 drops of H2O2 were added to one bottle, an none to the other. The result: 100% of the treated Fry survived and 100% of the untreated Fry perished.(Ref: http://www.fws.gov and http://www.great-lakes.org) The FDA has classified H2O2 as a Low Regulatory Priority drug for use in controling fungus on fish and fish eggs.

Birds:

Use H2O2 to clean feeders, they can get mouldy really easily, to clean feeding dishes and water dishes, however: do not use on metal dishes as it may result in the metal rusting quicker than it may otherwise.

Cats and Dogs:

To some animals chlorine can smell like urine,so imagine how the animal will feel about eating out of a food bowl cleaned with chlorine bleach if to them it smells like urine!

Hydrogen Peroxide can be used to clean cats and dogs. Spray 1% - 3% H2O2 onto a clean dish towel and rub the damp towel on the animals fur,rub in the same direction as if you were petting the animal and be gentle around the ears and paws. Be careful to keep H2O2 away from the eyes.

To eliminate terrible odours from pets who have rolled in something nasty use this formula:

  • 1 quart of 3% H2O2 ¼ cup bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp liquid soap such as liquid castile
  • Wet your pet, apply the mixture keeping away from eyes and inside the ears, rinse well

Do not store this mixture, it should be used straight away.

A treatment for Mange:

• Add 1 – 2 tablspoons of brax to 1% H2O2
• To make 3% H2O2 into 1% simply mix one part H2O2 with 2 parts distilled water.
• Apply mixture to the dog, wash with this solution daily but do not rinse it off.

The Borax will destroy the eggs which cause the Mange. It is also advisable to clean the floors and spray the bedding with the solution to prevent the dog becoming re-infected.

H2O2 may also be added to the drinking water in very small quantities, one or two drops in a pint of drinking water. Do not use chlorinated water, used either distilled or filtered water.
